The Nursing Journal of India
Nursing Journal of India (NJI) is the one of the world’s oldest journal regularly published with a legacy of more than 100 years.

NANDA International Taxonomy II has been identified as the standardised nursing terminology. Patient’s overall needs can be well addressed with the help of NANDA-I nursing diagnosis, which is followed worldwide. With this view, the study was conducted with the purpose of identifying patients’ needs based on NANDA-I Taxonomy II among patients admitted in ICUs and to find out the correlation between patients’ needs in two different setups of ICUs. In this study, a cross-sectional descriptive research design was adopted, and 114 ICU patients admitted in the Critical Care Unit of Critical Care Medicine in a tertiary care hospital were selected by a consecutive sampling technique. Data were collected using a self-structured Five-point Likert Scale based on 13 domains of selected classes in NANDA-I, Taxonomy II, along with demographic data. Result showed that patients are identified with moderate needs in domains of Health Promotion Nutrition, Elimination and Exchange, Activity and Rest, Perception/Recognition, Self-perception, Roles and Relationships, Coping/Stress Tolerance and Life principles; and more needs in domains of Safety/Protection in one of the ICU setups. Findings show significant correlations in both departments in the domains of Health promotion (p=0.025), Nutrition (p=0.001), Safety/Protection (p=0.000), and Comfort (p=0.000). Many studies have supported the findings of this research, indicating that most patients in the ICU have more identified needs that should not be overlooked in selected classes of domains of Health Promotion, Nutrition, Elimination and Exchange, Activity and Rest, Perception/Recognition, Self-perception, Roles and Relationships, Coping/Stress Tolerance and Life principles, and more needs in Domain Safety/Protection. This study recommends that NANDA I Taxonomy II should be used efficiently in ICUs by nursing staff so that individualised nursing care can be planned, considering the patient as a complete human being, not focusing only on biological aspects..
